The Charlemagne’s troops, coming back from the siege of Zaragoza, suffered in the Pyrenean pass of Roncesvalles an attack from the Basque tribes helped by the moors. The narrowness of the pass and weight of their weapons favored the success of this attack on the Carolingian rearguard.

In the tragic event Roland died, but legend took him into the memory of literature (Chanson de Roland, Roland stat, Orlando Furioso, etc.) as the hero, who faced 100,000 Saracens with his formidable sword “Durendal”, a personal gift from his lord Charlemagne.

Legends say that with a blow of Durendal, he opened a pass on the Pyrenees, known today as “Brèche de Roland”.

The Sword of Roland has a tempered steel blade, ornamented with 24K Gold engravings on the upper part. The 24K Gold plated cast metal hilt has the quillons, in the design of twin Lions heads, bended toward the blade with a heraldic shield and crest centered. The leaf-shaped pommel and is decorated with relief figures.
