The Nordic sword was also called the Norman Sword because of its use by the Normans. The Normans, also known as North Men or Norsemen were Scandinavian Vikings that raided European settlements during the 8th century. The French King, Charles the simple, gave the Normans land in hopes that they would stop attacking France. This new Norman land became known as Northmannia or Land of the Northmen, which later became Normandy. The Normans were eventually converted to Christianity and adopted Frankish cavalry warfare.
